Traumas, old hurts, emotional wounds, we all have them. Whether it's from a family member, a car accident, the sudden loss of a loved one, a fall, a surgery, an assault, the loss of a job, an unexpected break-up, whatever the root cause there are things that happen over the course of our lives that can shock the system and negatively impact us for many years.
We soldier on. We press ahead. But, beneath the surface, the unreleased trauma is doing it's damage and causing us to contract and pull away from the uncomfortable parts of our life instead of expanding and growing.
Through my experience as an assistant to Dr. Peter Levine I have been able to learn from the master and have benefitted greatly.. As the author of the seminal work "Waking The Tiger", and creator of Somatic Experiencing,, Dr. Levine is one of the world’s leading authorities on trauma and one of its most skilled practitioners. His pioneering work forms the foundation of Somatic Release Technique
Somatic Release Technique uses a body based approach to emotional healing and wholeness to help release held trauma and buried emotions, calm the nervous system, and give you greater access to your best self. The two primary modalities are:
SOMATIC NOTICING (In-Person or via Zoom)
Somatic Noticing is inspired by Dr. Peter Levine creator of Somatic Experiencing and the author of the landmark book on trauma "Waking The Tiger".
As the client shares, the facilitator listens and watches closely, gently bringing attention to the sensations coming up in the body and using them as a guide to deeper opening. With Somatic Noticing, old patterns and limiting beliefs can also reveal themselves and begin to be released. Sessions are conducted in person and also via Zoom
THE POINT HOLDING PROCESS (In-Person)
In person sessions also include the "Points Holding Process".
First developed by Dr. John Whitman Ray, “Point Holding” is a process in which the facilitator holds specific points on the clients body in order to help facilitate the release of held trauma and provide greater access to emotions on the subconscious level..
A HEALING COMBINATION
By bringing together the combination of Somatic Noticing and Point Holding, Somatic Release Technique can provide powerful results. Clients often report feeling calmer, more relaxed, more present, and less easily triggered in situations which have traditionally been difficult.

John received his first Somatic Release Session in 2003. Having already experienced conventional talk therapy he was immediately struck by how the somatic work enabled deeper and far more powerful healing.
His journey to becoming a Somatic Release Practitioner himself started in 2005 when he began doing massage work while at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur. His many years of hands on work did a great job of preparing him to be a Somatic Practitioner by developing his ability to listen to the body and let its wisdom lead the session.
John began his formal Somatic Release Technique training in 2015 through a series of training sessions conducted by the Somatic Institute. He followed that with a comprehensive year and a half long training program led by Catalina Ureta of the Somatic institute and Judith Johnson, founder of PsychoNeuroEnergetics. Upon completion of the training he received his certification as a Somatic Release Technique practitioner.
I trusted John immediately even though I usually prefer to work with female practitioners in any healing environment. Incredibly caring and an astute and attentive practitioner. John brings compassion and humor to his work, all of it borne from a great depth of experience.
During my somatic release session with John Petz we worked with a major childhood trauma that had negatively impacted me for many years.
The session released held trauma and rewired my mind and body in a way that I can now remember one of the most traumatic events of my life in a way that feels truly different. It lost all its somatic charge and no longer brings up feelings of anxiety. So freeing.

Having experienced a persistent and painful memory of shaming by a family member, I was able to book a long distance video session with John in Santa Monica. I was put at ease instantly by his warmth and kindness. John took the time to help me explore my own feelings and associations around the event while bringing me slowly but skillfully to the body’s held suffering.
His compassion, insight, guidance and instruction on techniques to help myself through touch brought definite release and integration. I highly recommend John as a deeply intuitive and gifted healer.
I came to John after an accident in which I lacerated my foot while moving into a new home. When we began working with the incident John led me to the moments preceding the accident which held more meaning than I had expected. As we dove further into the situation, I uncovered unconscious feelings of being internally conflicted about the move.
John gently guided me through exploring these feelings while helping me become aware of the associated body sensations. I gained more and more insight into the emotions laying beneath the injury. As we processed these emotions, the pain in my foot began to calm and the conflict I felt about moving was resolved.
I left the session with a deeper understanding of the entire incident, a sense of integration and returned sensation where my foot had previously been numb! I was now ready to embrace my new home and the adventure ahead. What an incredible journey. I am so grateful to have worked with John!
I came to John while I was in the midst of a painful break-up. The end of the relationship had come suddenly and had left me traumatized and on the verge of tears most days.
During the course of our work together, John helped calm my system and bring me out of the worst of the trauma. As we continued to work together I was able to follow the sensations in my body and uncover an early childhood trauma that had negatively affected my relationships my entire life.
With John's help I was able to release that trauma. I now feel calmer and healthier about relationships than I ever have.
I was doing healing work with another modality and it brought up rage and agitation from my childhood that I couldn’t shake. I decided to see John who had been recommended to me. After our first session I noticed that a lot of the agitation had dissipated and I felt significantly calmer.
I decided to book a series of five sessions and I’m glad I did. Over the course of those sessions I was able to revisit some difficult childhood experiences that had stayed with me for years and that I had never been able to resolve using conventional talk therapy.
With John’s skillful support, I was able to revisit those experiences in a way that released their hold on me and helped me take back my power. As a result of the work we did together I now feel lighter, more grounded and more like the person I truly am.
